about
This is a song that was 10 years in the making. Sort of.
In year 7 I had this girlfriend and we were extremely awkward around each other. We could barely say a word. And yet we were "together" for almost the whole of that school year bound by a mutual misunderstanding of who the other person was.
Yet I was obsessed with her and I can recall how strongly I felt despite, again, barely ever speaking. This relationship was pretty formative for me and back then I couldn't possibly put my feelings into words.
So this one is for you, 11 year old Tom.
Oh, also, "still in my heart you reside" just sounds nice and adds a bit of a wall between the song and reality. Don't read into it. I think the people you "go out" with always hold a special place in your heart but that doesn't mean you want to be with them still which is sorta what that line implies. I love my wife.
lyrics
I've been staring out of windows as of late
With careful consideration to the records I play
The ones that allow me to visualise your face
The ones that sound like those endless summer days
I didn't know you
You didn't know me
But always on my mind
Is where you seemed to want to be
Now the days have flown by
Still in my heart you reside
I want to know where the people go
So I can live my former life
Without you
It's been a good few years
But I'm still learning to survive
I didn't know you
You didn't know me
But always on my mind
Is where you seemed to want to be
Now the years go by
Still in my heart you reside
I still want to know where the people go
So I can live my former life
It's fashionable to sing
Of a love that meant nothing
The closest I ever felt was halfway around the world
But with passion, that's the thing
Because you meant everything
And now you'll be in places unknown
That I will never
see
again
I didn't know you
You didn't know me
But always on my mind
Is where you're destined to be
Now the years go by
Still in my heart you reside
I still want to know where the people go
So I can live my former life

To this day still one of my favorite albums, and I've been told that the influence can be seen in my own music. Such nostalgic and inspirational songwriting. Thomas Lock
Something a little different: Big Big Train write some incredible and truly progressive rock telling tales of old English folklore. Takes me back to childhood holidays camping around the country. Thomas Lock
