about
This song probably has the most obvious lyrics of any song I've written. It's about frustration with the small time musician circuit, written after I found myself asking "When, exactly, will the bullshit end?"
It's difficult to get people to take you seriously, and it's even more difficult to get a reply to an email or for people to actually pay attention when you're a nobody. There are exceptions, of course, and I've met some genuinely lovely people whilst doing all of this. They're the "individuals that make it worth it."
This is also first on the EP and first during performances as it's sort of a mission statement and admission that I know I'm not the best there is, even within a 10 mile radius but I'm gonna do this thing anyway because I love it.
The album art features a picture of me during a guitar solo, taken from a concert at a now closed down venue called the Asylum with my progressive rock band. I thought it appropriate for the lyrics as that was a time when I was first discovering how this industry operates at this level. I've still got a long way to go...
lyrics
Not gonna pretend that I'm the next best thing
When I'm a so-called artist with a familiar ring
I'll sit in my room and try to connect the right words to make you swoon
A so-called artist presenting... nothing new
It's the same old circuit that everyones in
Just wait a minute and we'll count ourselves in
1, 2, 3 you're a lot like me
In the same old circuit we all race around in
Do you get words when you're walking along the street?
A late night poet but pathetic at everything
Hit every night that you can
Trying your best to expand
Just one more show and I'll be back on my feet
It's the same old circuit that everyones in
Just wait a minute and we'll count ourselves in
1, 2, 3 you're a lot like me
In the same old circuit we all race around in
Don't you know?
They never really care
Don't you know?
You're not the reason that they're all there
Another name on a list of 5 or 6
It's individuals that make it worth it
It's the same old circuit that everyones in
Just wait a minute and we'll count ourselves in
1, 2, 3 you're a lot like me
In the same old circuit we all race around in
Leave the same old circuit that everyones in
Just wait a year and then we'll march ourselves in
5, 6, 8 and we'll alleviate
Leave the same old circuit we're forever trapped in

To this day still one of my favorite albums, and I've been told that the influence can be seen in my own music. Such nostalgic and inspirational songwriting. Thomas Lock
Something a little different: Big Big Train write some incredible and truly progressive rock telling tales of old English folklore. Takes me back to childhood holidays camping around the country. Thomas Lock
